A 12-BORE PERCUSSION SPORTING GUN AND A 14-BORE PERCUSSION SPORTING GUN
The first by John Sampson, Liverpool, circa 1850, the second by Nicholson, London, early 19th Century
The first with rebrowned twist barrel stamped 'Liverpool' on the top flat of the breech, patent breech, signed lock (hammer replaced), walnut half-stock (defects and repairs), chequered grip (worn), engraved iron mounts including trigger-guard with pineapple finial, later horn fore-end tip, and later brass-tipped ramrod (iron parts with surface pitting), Birmingham proof marks; the second converted from flintlock, with two-stage sighted barrel octagonal at the breech, patent breech with platinum line, signed lock with stepped tail, walnut half-stock (minor defects), engraved iron mounts including trigger-guard with pineapple finial, silver escutcheon, and later ramrod (iron parts pitted)
