AN UNUSUAL PAIR OF 32-BORE OVER-AND-UNDER FLINTLOCK HOLSTER PISTOLS
Signed C.T. Lichten Stein (sic), circa 1720-30
With fixed swamped tapering barrels each with full-length sighting flat, the upper barrel signed, fitted with brass fore-sight, and engraved with sprays of foliage on the breech, long border engraved grooved tangs each secured by two screws, left- and right-hand flat bevelled locks each chiselled in low relief with the seated figure of Diana, scrollwork, a stag and a hind, all on a punched ground (one action worn), moulded walnut full stocks carved with strapwork and foliage in relief, no provision for ramrods, brass trigger-guards cast and chased on the bow with strapwork in low relief on a punched ground enclosing a differing Classical portrait bust, brass butt-caps in the form of a monster-head surmounted by foliage, and horn fore-end caps (some wear and minor surface pitting, the fore-ends each with inset repairs)
