Carrick Fox is regarded, along with her with her husband, as one of Australia's most significant post-impressionist painters. Following the examples of her influences, Monet, Sisley and Pissaro, "she adopted their feathery brushstrokes, painted out of doors in all weather and aimed to convey the effects of light and colour in her paintings". (S de Vries, Ethel Carrick Fox: Travels and Triumphs of a Post Impressionist, Brisbane, 1997, p. 8).
Autumn in Paris, depicts a leisurely and social stroll through one of Paris' many beautifully tendered green boulevards. The actual location is not what is crucial, nor the identity of the ladies who parade in their hats. It is the awakening of our other senses which contribute to the overall sensitivity of the work. One can almost hear the crackling under foot of fallen leaves, the excited shrieks of children at play behind park fences, the buzz of automobiles shuttling past and even feel the warmth of the sunlight shafts passing through the tree canopy.
