Lot Essay

This sculpture, which was commissioned by the Centre Internationale d'Art Contemporain Château Beychevelle in Bordeaux, 1991, is one of four works by Michael Glancy in which the interior glass element and the 'double helix' metal cage are designed not as separate components but as an overall composition in which the cage is an integral part of the form. 'Arete-The-Virtue' and the other three sculptures relate to one another in scale and intent. 'Tevatron Fusion' (1995), is of similar size to the lot offered here, and the other two sculptures, 'Nucleic Genesis' (1997) and 'Golden Nucleic Fusion' (1990) are approximately double their height. 'Nucleic Genesis' was sold at Christie's, New York, Masterworks: 1900-2000, June 8, 2000, lot 266.
