Lot Essay

The Soho Press camera was sold by Soho Ltd and made for them by one of the firm's component companies, A. Kershaw & Sons of Leeds. The patent on which the shutter mechanism was based was granted to A. G. Wenban on 19 August 1920 and related to a mechanism for operating roller-blind and particularly focal-plane shutters to give time, bulb and instantaneous exposures. The patent was used in most focal-plane camera produced by Kershaw after this date. The lens dates to 1922. This camera was a development of the earlier A.P.M. focal-plane press camera also made by Kershaws.
