Lot Essay

Lucien Mathelin (1905-1981), from the north of France, borrowed heavily from the Flemish and Dutch tradition of trompe l'oeil, incorporating this technique into his own work. Often his work reflects such close observation of everyday objects though yielding a more surrealistic result. At the age of nineteen, Mathelin was invited to the Salon d'Automne, and subsequently participated regularly in the Salon des Indépendants, the Tuileries, and the Artistes Décorateurs et de l'Imagerie. His first one-man exhibition was at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris in 1971.
