ANDREW SZOEKE, CIRCA 1950

Andrew Szoeke was born in Hungary, and trained in Vienna. While in Vienna, he attended the Kunstgewerbeschule and the Wiener Werkstatte. Working as furniture designer, he was influenced by those he came in contact with, such as Josef Hoffmann and Dagobert Peche. In 1921, Szoeke left Vienna for New York, where he worked in advertising, and became well-known for his calligraphy, which appeared in magazines such as Harper's Bazaar and Town and Country. During his lifetime (he died in 1969), it was said of Szoeke "he lives and dies for furniture."
