A Limoges enamelled dish
19th Century
The oval dish depicting a palace interior with a lady prostrate in front of a king, in the background a king lying in bed with courtiers in attendance (possibly the tale of Antiochus and Stratonica), within a border of scrolling foliage, the rim decorated with S-scroll acanthus and cherubs, the reverse centred by a portrait medallion within strapwork flanked by herms, slight wear and surface scratches, in a gilt-tooled fitted leather case (distressed)

Lot Essay

Antiochus and Stratonica (Plutarch 43:38).
Antiochus was the son of Seleucus, founder of the ruling dynasty of Asia Minor after the death of Alexander the Great. He fell in love with his stepmother Stratonica, believing his love to be futile he chose to starve himself to death. Seleucus on being informed of Antiochus' malady abdicated the throne to Antiochus and Stratonica.
