Lot Essay

This marriage chest, executed to celebrate the 1885 marriage of Queen Victoria's daughter Beatrice (d.1955) to Prince Henry Maurice of Battenburg (d. 1896), was designed by Charles Trapnell to house the embroidered coverlet worked by the ladies of Bristol, and was executed by the celebrated Bristol firm of Trapnell & Gane, Ltd.
Messrs Trapnell and Son were amongst the exhibitors to London's Great Exhibition of 1851, and the firm was registered as Trapnell & Gane from 1872 to 1954.
