LENNART BERNADOTTE, SCHLOSS MAINAU (LOTS 335-339) The 110 acre island of Mainau is located in the Lake Constance, in the Southern part of Baden. From 1272 to 1806 Mainau belonged to the German Order. The castle and the church constructed between 1732-1746 by Johann Casper Bagnato are typical examples of the Baroque architecture of this area. During the secularisation in 1806 Mainau came into the possession of the state of Baden. From the early 1820s until its purchase by the Grand Duke Friedrich I von Baden in 1853 the property had changed hands several times. It became the summer residence of the House of Baden with Viktoria, the daughter of Friedrich I inheriting Mainau. In 1881 she married Gustaf V Bernadotte and became Queen of Sweden. Her youngest son Wilhelm was married to the Russian Grand Duchess Maria Pawlowna; their son Count Lennart Bernadotte, a great-grandchild of the Grand Duke of Baden inherited the island Mainau from his grandmother, the Queen of Sweden. Count Lennart Bernadotte now lives on the island with his family. In 1974 he founded the Lennart Bernadotte Foundation, the current owner of the island.
