8° (247 x 156mm). 10 colour-printed plates after Hesse. Together with the 10 original pen-and-ink and watercolour drawings by Hesse, some tipped onto scrap paper, some with autograph annotations. Original limp vellum, yapp fore-edges, box. Provenance: Josef Englert (1874-1957, the dedicatee of the private printing, presentation inscription on front flyleaf, 'Mag ich morgen nicht mehr sein -- , heute bin ich da! , Hermann Hesse', and by descent).

FIRST EDITION. NUMBER 352 OF 500 COPIES, INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR TO THE DEDICATEE AND WITH HESSE'S ORIGINAL ILLUSTRATIONS. Englert -- the original owner of this and the following four lots -- was an engineer and architect, who had met Hesse in Montagnola in 1920. The two men became close friends, and, as Englert became wealthy in the late 1920s, he increasingly acted as Hesse's patron, commissioning calligraphic manuscripts from him, supporting private publications (such as the present volume), and sponsoring Hesse's skiing holidays.

Hesse sent this volume to Englert in late autumn 1931; in an accompanying letter, he asked whether Englert knew of anyone who would like to buy a copy: 'It was originally thought of only as a present for my friends, I renounced any fee for text and drawings, and secured only a few dozen exemplars for myself. But now my circumstances have altered, and I will be happy if I can sell a proportion of these exemplars'. The present volume, like those numbered 1-50, is bound in full vellum (the remainder of the edition was bound in half vellum). Mileck Hesse I, III/28.
