Introduced in 1972, the 365 GT4 began a series 2+2 coupé that Ferrari would continue for more than 20 years. Mechanically similar to the Ferrari GTC/4, the coupé GT4 2+2 had a longer wheelbase than its predecessor. By stretching the wheelbase, Pininfarina was able to build a generously sized 2+2. With the traditional V12 engine, the Ferrari was no slouch and top speed was a quoted 150mph.
From the outset, the intention was to challenge the finest luxury saloons that were available, and it was anticipated that large demand would come from the lucrative American market, though sadly the costs involved in meeting the stringent US regulations denied it this option. When Ferrari developed the model into the 400 and 412 it would feature automatic transmission, an aspect that was to become synonymous with the car, but the 365 GT4s were all manual. This allows the enthusiast to remain part of the driving experience, whilst still enjoying the avante garde aerodynamic styling.
This 365 has been in the present ownership for just over three years, during which time it has received a service at marque specialist Terry Hoyle. This work included adjustment of the timing chain, overhaul of the brakes and the solving of an electrical fault, a bill on file for this work amounts to £2,800 expenditure. On a recent inspection of the car, the paintwork and interior were found to be in good order, and had clearly been refurbished at some stage.
A copy of the handbook for the model, together with current MoT are offered with the car. It is currently Dutch registered but as such it is within the European Community and there are no taxes to pay. Should a successful purchaser wish to register the car in the U.K. Christie's would be pleased to assist.
