Lot Essay

When acquired by the present owners in 1973, the present picture was said to have come from the collection of Henry Howard, 4th Earl of Carlisle (1694-1758), at Castle Howard, as part of a large group of works by the artist acquired for Carlisle through Antonio Maria Zanetti (1680-1767) in Venice. This provenance has been maintained in all the subsequent literature cited above. However, Charles Beddington has kindly pointed out that there is actually no evidence in the Castle Howard archives to support this and that the present work does not match any of the eleven Castle Howard views sold by the executors of the late Hon. Geoffrey W.A. Howard in these Rooms, 18 February 1944, lots 10-14, as 'Canaletto', all of which were vedute.
