3 volumes, 8o (235 x 146 mm). 152 hand-colored engraved plates by W. Clark and S. Watts after C. M. Curtis and Augusta Innes Withers, 5 double-page, five only partly colored, without plate 80 but with a duplicate of plate 79 (folding plates 1 and 29 a bit creased, plates 21 and 134 partly split along fold, some occasional pale foxing). Contemporary green half morocco gilt, edges gilt (a bit worn, vol. I loose in binding). Provenance: Massachusetts Horticultural Society, Stickney Fund (bookplate dated 1871; stamps).
FIRST EDITION. The work is a re-issue of Lindley's The Pomological Magazine, published by James Ridgeway between 1828 and 1830. All except five of the plates are from originals by Mrs.Withers, who at the time of the present publication was "Flower and Fruit Painter in Ordinary to Queen Victoria."
