LINNAEUS, Carolus (1707-1778). Flora Lapponica exhibens plantas per Lapponiam crescentes. Amsterdam: S. Schouten, 1737.
8o (191 x 116 mm). Engraved frontispiece by A. van der Laan after M. Hofman, 12 engraved full-apron plates (some minor pale foxing). (Small hole on V2 catching a few letters.) Contemporary calf (rebacked). Provenance: John Coakley Lettsom (bookplate); Charles S. Sargent (MHS presentation bookplate dated 1892); Massachussetts Horticultural Society (stamps).
The first collected account of Linnaeus's travels in Finland in 1732. Linnaeus made a circular tour from Uppsala around Finland, noting en route much of the native flora and fauna. The first published account of this important expedition appeared in Actaliteria et scientarium Sveciae in 1732 and 1735 under the title Florula Lapponica. Linnaeus sought the help of a group of interested Amsterdammers to help fund the illustration and production costs of the work, while Linnaeus busied himself with the text during his stay in Leiden. The work appeared to critical acclaim, even though his methodology was not fully appreciated. The first Swedish translation appeared in 1905. Hunt 502; Stafleu & Cowan 4717.
