(Some browning and staining to plates, especially in vols. II and III). 19th-century red half morocco gilt, gilt edges (covers of vol. I detached, some rubbing to edges). Provenance: Massachusetts Horticultural Society, Stickney Fund (bookplate dated 1869; stamps).

FIRST EDITION. The collation of this copy corresponds with that of the collation in Stafleu and Cowan. Great Flower Books calls for only 191 plates (with the additional plates 63bis and 67bis, lacking plate 160). Saint-Hilaire, French botanist and traveller, was born at Orleans. In 1816-1822 and in 1830 he travelled in South America, especially in south and central Brazil, and the results of his study of the rich flora of the regions through which he passed appeared in several books inculding his Flora Brasiliae Meridionalis. In preparing this work, Saint-Hilaire became ill, this led to the collaboration with de Jussieu and Cambessèdes beginning in 1827. Very rare, only one other copy (Plesch) appeared at auction in the past 26 years. Cleveland Collections 906; Great Flower Books 74; Nissen BBI 1715; Stafleu & Cowan TL2 10034.
