Connu autrefois sous le nom de Château Brane-Mouton et autrefois un second grand cru classé, la propriété fut acquise en 1853 par le Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, de la branche Anglaise de la famille de Rothschild. Pourtant, malgré l'excellence du cru, aucun membre de la famille ne s'y intéressa véritablement jusqu'en 1922 quand, âgé de 20 ans le Baron Philippe, décida de prendre en mains les destinées du domaine.
Les 65 années de son règne furent marquées par sa forte personnalité et son sens de l'innovation.En 1945, pour célébrer la libération, le Baron Philippe eut l'idée de couronner l'étiquette de ce millésime par un dessin approprié. Ce fut le début de la passionnante collection d'oeuvres originales créées chaque année par des artistes célèbres. En 1973, Château Mouton-Rothschild devint officiellement un Premier Grand Cru Classé.
En 1988, la Baronne Philippine de Rothschild, prit en mains les destinées du Château. Aujourd'hui maintenir et innover sont les principes de son action. Comme l'écrit récemment Michael Broadbent: 'Les vins de Mouton-Rothschild reflètent le style et la personnalité du Baron Philippe et aujourd'hui de sa fille'
"First I am, second I was, I Mouton do not change"
Known as Château Brane-mouton and formerly a second classified growth, the property was renamed as Château Mouton-Rothschild in 1853 when the property was purchased by the Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild, an English member of the Rothschild family. Despite the excellence of the wine, however no member of the family took any real interest in it until 1922 when the 20 year old Baron Philippe, decided to take over the running of the property.
The 65 years of his reign were stamped by his personality and his sense of innovation. In 1945, Baron Philippe conceived the original idea of crowning the Mouton label with a symbol to celebrate the liberation of France. So began the tradition of identifying each vintage label with an original work of art created specifically for this purpose by famous artists. In 1973, Château Mouton Rothschild became officially a First Classified Growth.
In 1988, Baroness Philippine de Rothschild succeeded her father. Since then she has presided over the interests of the Château and the family business with regard to their running, improvement and development. As written recently by Michael Broadbend: 'The wine of Mouton Rothschild reflect the style and personality of the late Baron Philippe and today his daughter'.

Note de dégustation:...D'un beau rubis-grenat foncé, il présente, outre un doux nez de cèdre, de chocolat, de cassis et d'épices, un fruite mûr et richement extrait, et une finale massive, ample et tannique. VAT of 20.6% on hammer and premium. On proof of export the VAT on the hammer can be repaid by Christies.
The VAT on the premium cannot (place of supply in France and not covered by the reverse charge procedure)
