A BRONZE MORTAR
Italian, 1560
With a simple strapwork cartouche at the front of the body; inscribed around the upper rim 'BLAXIVS.BOCIVS.M.D.LX.'; with a small circular recess on either side, possibly where handles have been broken off.
Blackish brown patina with warm brown high points; casting flaws; dents.
8½ in. (21.5 cm.) high, 10¼ in. (26 cm.) diam.
