The handles in the form of a cartouche with a bust of a woman; inscribed around the upper rim '+E+R+D+B+S+ANGIOLI ANI+DNI MDCXXII'; the body with two further cartouches, one with q rearing dog, the other inscribed '+ PIETRO. DOISEMONT FRANCESE A PERVGIA. FECIT.' and a hunt scene in relief.
Dark brown patina and traces of oxidization; dents.
11 in. (28 cm.) high, 13½ in. (34.4 cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

The inscription on the body of this mortar indicates that the mortar was made by a Frenchman in Perugia, Pierre d'Oisemont.
