A BRUSSELS BIBLICAL TAPESTRY

Woven in wools and silks, depicting Raguel giving the hand of Sarah to Tobias from The Story of Tobit and Tobias, with Raguel to the center joining Sarah and Tobias as man and wife, to the right with Raphael joining the celebrations after his return, within a grisaille border of scrolling foliage, decorated with various birds and medallions depicting to the top Jacob and Rebecca before Isaac, to the right Esau Hunting, to the left Jacob and Rachel and to the bottom Jacob's Dream, the corners with strapwork cartouches decorated with masks and with a blue outer slip, with Brussels town mark and weaver's mark, the top and lower blue slip rewoven, the left hand slip partly rewoven

Lot Essay

After Raguel joined Sarah and Tobias as man and wife, he asked Tobias to stay with him for two weeks. Tobias, worried about his father who was waiting for him, sent Raphael to collect the money from Gabael and asked for Gabael to join the festivities at Raguel's house.
