Lot Essay

The present bronze statuettes are after original marbles executed by Jean-Baptiste Tuby for the gardens of Versailles. The figure of Acis was carved in 1667-74, and was originally positioned in a niche in the Grotto of Thetis (F. Souchal, French Sculptors of the 17th and 18th centuries - The reign of Louis XIV, III, p. 331). The figure of the Lyric Poem was one of four figures representing different types of poetry, and stands on the south ramp of the Parterre de Latone (ibid, p. 145).
