Lot Essay

These splendid candelabra can be attributed to the celebrated bronzier Claude Galle (1759-1815), one of the princical suppliers of bronzes d'ameublement to the Garde-Meuble Imperial. The bases of these are closely related to those on a pair which Galle delivered for the Salon d'Imperatrice at Fontainebleau in 1807 (J.-P. Samoyault, Pendules et bronzes d'ameublement entrés sous le Premier Empire, Paris, 1989, p. 157, fig. 134), and to those on a further pair, which was sold from the collection of the late Lady Inchyra, in these Rooms, 5 July 2001, lot 236.
