(LOTS 191-215) The following group of furniture and works of art was assembled by William Norman Rumball (1906-1989), an eminent Jersey-based collector who also played a distinguished part in the war effort in the Channel Islands during the Second World War. A fluent French speaker from an early age, and with an uncle in Paris, he had a natural affinity for France and French culture. Shortly after joining Westminster Bank in England, his linguistic skills led to a transfer to Jersey, where he remained for the rest of his life. His war record was particularly impressive, as he was appointed by the Bailiff of Jersey to embark on a mission to purchase food on the mainland of France for the beleaguered islands. In November 1944 he managed to escape the island, which was still under German control, to join the U.S. troops in Normandy, carrying with him a vital letter urgently requesting food aid from the British government. This resulted in the arrival of the 'Vega', a Red Cross ship, in Jersey in January 1945, bringing much-needed relief to the islands, which by then were running critically low on supplies. After the war he joined the stockbroking firm of Le Masurier, James and Chinn, and had a long and distinguished career, serving as President from 1970 until his death in 1989. He enjoyed a close circle of friends from the stockbroking and golfing worlds (he was the President of the La Moye Golf Club from 1968 until he died), who shared his interest in the fine arts and collecting. This and his natural affinity for France led him to assemble a remarkable group of French furniture and works of art, many of which are included in this sale. He would avidly research his purchases, scouring auction catalogues and regularly visiting dealers and restorers. He bought both in Paris and in London, and also in the great collection sales of the period, such as the celebrated Mentmore sale, at which he purchased the charming secretaire by Schey (lot 212 in this sale).
