Lot Essay

Sir Edward Nicholas (1593-1669) was Secretary of State from 1641 until King Charles I's execution in 1649. He then joined King Charles II's court-in-exile in Holland, returning to England at the Restoration in 1660 and finally retiring as Secretary of State in 1662. According to the Dictionary of National Biography he spent his retirement forming a collection of pictures.
