This same model of chinoiserie female figure appears on the pair of chenets almost certainly supplied to Madame Infante, Louise-Elizabeth of France, duchesse de Parma for the Palazzo di Colorno. Illustrated in A. Gonzalez-Palacios, Gli Arredi Francesi, Milan, 1995, no.71, they are probably those recorded in the Colorno Inventory of 1811:- deux chenets avec facade de bronze dor/ae repr/aesentant deux figures chinoises.
Whilst Madame Infante is known to have purchased much directly from the marchand-mercier Lazare Duvaux, as well as from the ciseleur, doreur sur métaux du Roy Antoine Lelièvre, it was Caffiéri who was most extensively patronised on the Colorno commision. It is therefore extremely interesting to note that in the 1755 Inventory taken following the death of Jacques Caffieri in 1755, number 5 was described as un autre mod/gele de garniture de gril repr/asentant un Chinois et une Chinoise. A pair of these chenets is in the Jack and Belle Linsky Collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (ibid.).
Other clocks of this celebrated model include that sold from the Elizabeth Parke Firestone Collection, Christie's New York, 22-23 March 1991, lot 873; another illustrated in P. Kjellberg, La Pendule Fran/dcaise, Paris, 1997, p.117, ill.G; another, but with gilt-bronze figure, sold from the collection of Ilhamy Hussein Pachas, Ader, Tajan, 15 March 1993, lot 442; and that, also with movement by Galland, sold anonymously at Sotheby's Monaco, 14 june 1982, lot 526.
