Each rectangular panel centering a coat of arms surmounted by a coronet within elaborately scrolled foliate borders incorporating shells, flower-filled baskets and birds

Lot Essay

A copy of Lodovico Ariosto's Orlando Furioso, 1634, with the marquise de Pompadour's arms embossed on the binding was sold in her sale in Paris, 1765, lot 1304 and was subsequently in the Wrightsman Collection (illustrated in F. J. B. Watson, The Wrightsman Collection - III, New York, 1970, no.74).
