This ormolu-enriched secretaire is designed in the French manner after the Egyptian style promoted by Baron Vivant Denon's Voyages dans la Basse et la Haute Egypte, 1802, and C. Percier and P. Fontaine's Recueil de decorations interieurs, 1802. Its form, derived from a pylon-shaped 'altar', is surmounted by a winged globe and uraei inspired by a bas-relief at Dendera.

Charles Morel, established in the rue St. Honor/ae by 1797, advertised himself in Les Petites Affiches of that same year as an /ab/aeniste capable of executing furniture 'dans le dernier go/cout'. In 1807, he obtained several commisions for the Garde Meuble Imp/aeriale and at the end of Napoleon's reign he supplied an Egyptian bookcase designed to hold twenty-two volumes of the Description de l'Egypte, of which the engraving is illustrateed above. A pair of bookcases that directly correspond with Morel's design, signed Morel /aeb/aeniste.....1813 , was sold anonymously in these Rooms, 11 February 1982, lot 54.

Morel appears to have specialised in furniture in the Egyptian taste, and the style enjoyed prolonged popularity, as he supplied as late as 1835 un meuble..d'un style /aegyptien for King Louis-Philippe's use in the biblioth/geque du Roi at the Louvre.

THE DUCHESSE DE DINO

This secretaire was almost certainly acquired by the duchesse de Dino for Rochecotte. Dorothée de Courlande, duchesse de Dino and princess of Sagan, subject to the Tsar of Russia, owner of the castle of Lobikaù, married in 1809 Edmond de Périgord, nephew of prince of Bénévent.
Brought up in Mittau, capital of French emigration during the Revolution, the young Dorothée wrote to her future husband "...je cède au désir de ma mère sans répugnance à la vérité mais avec la plus parfaite indifférence pour vous...".

ROCHECOTTE CASTLE

In the Loire county, Rochecotte was built in the 18th Century for the marquis de Rochecotte. Bought by the duchess de Dino in 1825, the castle was then modified and enlarged. Rochecotte was then bought largely furnished in in 1934 by the architect Emilio Terry, brother-in-law of Count Stanislas de Castellane, heir of the duchesse de Dino.
