Each with a padded back, arms and seat cushion upholstered in a cream silk with mint-green edging, the overscrolled square back, arm supports, seatrail and square tapering legs, the whole fitted with later ormolu rosettes and palmettes, one inscribed in chalk SACHA GUITRY

Lot Essay

The matinée idol Sacha Guitry and his wife were keen collector's of French furniture, and indeed purchased the celbrated 'Pagoda' Master commode from the collection of Lord Wilton in 1950. This latter commode was resold from the collection of Joanne Toor Cummings, Christie's New York, 21 May 1996, lot 238.
