Another version of this subject, slightly smaller, signed, and titled on the mount is in the Leeds City Art Galleries, D. Morris, Thomas Hearne 1744-1817, exhibition catalogue, 1985-6, no. 65, illustrated. Hearne made visits to the New Forest area and the Isle of Wight in the early 1790s.
The town of Lymington is seen from the east bank of the eponymous river with the Isle of Wight in the distance, across the Solent. As David Morris points out, Hearne would have travelled through the New Forest on his way to the coast and encountered the local trade in timber.
