Lot Essay

In the 1830s Maclise worked for Fraser's Magazine as an illustrator under the pseudonym 'Alfred Croquis' (in French croquis means sketch). He was elected to the Royal Academy in 1840, and was subsequently offered presidency of the Academy and a knighthood, both of which he turned down.
