Lot Essay

Bamborough Castle was a favourite subject for Varley. A similar view was sold in these Rooms, 17 June 1969, lot 169, illustrated and a spectacular set of four views of the castle dated 1808 were sold for £52,000 on 2 April 1996, lot 44. He also exhibited at least two views at the Old Watercolour Society in 1828 (no. 199) and 1840 (no. 41).
