The work of John Laporte shows the influence of earlier masters on watercolour painters at the end of the 18th Century. Laporte took Dr Monro as a pupil and was active in his academy. Paul Sandby's influence is clearly seen in Laporte's bodycolour work, and a less obvious source of inspiration was Thomas Gainsborough: Laporte published A Collection of Prints Illustrative of English Scenery from the Drawings and Sketches of Thomas Gainsborough, London, 1802, with W.F. Wells.
