Lot Essay

Bonington's The Wheatfield, Castle Museum and Art Gallery, Nottingham (P. Noon, On the Pleasure of Painting, Yale, 1991, p. 195, no. 81, illustrated in colour) of 1826 can be compared to this and the previous watercolour in both composition and technique. Boys and Bonington have used a very dry brush together with finger and light scratching out to produce the effect of a dry cornfield.
