Lot Essay

As Hauptman op. cit., points out, the present watercolour shows the influence of Turner, particularly in the luminosity of the background. Like Turner, Wyld has concentrated on the sunset as his subject, and the Claudian landscape, dark silhouetted figures and Arcadian buildings become secondary to the intense light.
