Lot Essay

Bonington's early work is almost indistinguishable from Francia's work in this manner. A watercolour by Bonington (Shipping off Calais Pier, 1818) in a private collection is comparable in both composition and technique (P. Noon, On the Pleasure of Painting, New Haven, 1991, p. 16, fig. 2).
