Lot Essay

Having left Egypt in April 1867 after his second trip, Lear and his servant Giorgio Kokali decided that it was too early in the year to return to England and so arriving at Brindisi undertook a leisurely journey along the coast passing the forest of Ravenna where Byron had lived. They then visited Rimini and the Lombardy lakes before Giorgio departed for Corfu and Lear returned home.

The dates on this watercolour were probably added by Lear in 1884 when he will have revisited the watercolour in his studio. The erroneous date of '1866' was probably Lear's own confusion.

An oil painting entitled The Pineta, Ravenna, sold in these Rooms, 10 March 1995, lot 174 (£35,000). It was signed and inscribed 'painted by me from drawings made on the spot 1866 Edward Lear 1872'. Again Lear has made an error with the date.
