6 volumes, 2o (530 x 343 mm). Text in Latin, mounted on guards throughout. 8 hand-colored engraved titles, 404 (of 406) maps, engraved and woodcut illustrations in text, ALL COLORED IN A CONTEMPORARY HAND, all mounted on guards. Contemporary Dutch vellum gilt, gilt edges (some worming to hinges, lacking silk fore-edge ties, vol. I with head of spine and portions of upper edges worn away, some light staining to spines and covers).
A FINE TALL COPY OF THE LATIN ISSUE OF BLAEU'S ATLAS, SUPERBLY COLORED IN A CONTEMPORARY HAND, in its largest form as a 6-volume set. This set comprises:
Volume I in two parts, dated 1649 comprises: The World, Europe, Arctic, Scandinavia, Russia, Eastern Europe, Germany and the Low Countries. Engraved hand-colored titles for parts I and II, 120 double-page hand-colored engraved maps, including 6 folding maps and one single page map (some maps with minor marginal dampstaining, a few maps with separations along folds, one map, endpapers and index leaves creased). Volume II in two parts, dated 1650 comprises: France, Spain, Asia, Africa and America. Engraved hand-colored titles for parts I and II, 92 double-page engraved hand-colored maps, including one folding map (long split along fold to map of India, few maps splitting along fold, early ink mariginal mainly to text of American maps, light browning to a few maps). Koeman I, Bl 24B.
Volume III, dated 1655 comprises: Italy, Greece. Engraved hand-colored title, 62 (of 64) double-page engraved hand-colored maps (including two half-page and one one page map). (Missing the 2 "England" supplement maps, also noted by the early marginalia "error Indicis," 2 tiny worm-holes to Riviera di Genova map, light browing to a few maps.) Koeman I Bl 37B.
Volume IV, dated 1648 comprises: England and Wales. Engraved hand-colored title, 58 double-page engraved hand-colored maps, hand-colored engraved illustrations in text (minor browning to a few plates). Koeman I Bl44.
Volume V, dated 1654 comprises: Scotland and Ireland. Engraved hand-colored title, 55 double-page engraved hand-colored maps (map 16 Praefectura Kircubrienis loose, map 26 Glottiana Praefectura torn and repaired, light worming to blank lower corner to 22 maps at end). Koeman I Bl49.
