Manuscript on paper, (304 x 207 mm). 7 Leaves, foliated 51 to 57. Clear handwriting in brown ink from fol. 51 to fol. 57. From fol. 57 recto to fol. 57 verso, added personal note of gratitude addressed to the Capellao Mor by an anonymous clergyman (not related to the Auto-da-Fé itself).

List of 73 persons, condemned by the Holy Inquisition of Portugal in an Auto-da-Fé held on 26 December, 1623, stating sex, age and condition (i.e. if they were "Old Christians" or "New Christians") of the condemned and their crimes (for blasphemy, breaking the secret of the Inquisition, heresy, judaising etc), with a report of their punishments, such as reconciliation with the Catholic Church, the obligation to wear a sambenito, confiscation of property, imprisonment. In this Auto-da-fé no less than nine so-called "Judaisers" (6 men and 3 women) were burned at stake, two of them in absence. Particularly interesting is the case of Fernao Dias da Sylva, convicted for the heresy of judaising, who according to the report confessed that he was a "priest in the Law of Moses and as such performed the ceremonies of the Law" (fol. 56 verso). EXTREMELY RARE, no printed edition of this list is presently known. Not mentioned by Van der Vekene, Cassuto or Glaser.

The autos-da-fé or "acts of faith" staged by the Spanish and Portuguese Inquisition were highly spectacular exhibitions of the power of the Catholic Church, during which the supposed enemies of the faith were ritually exorcized. The sermons preached on these occasions were an essential ingredient of those autos-de-fé in which "Judaisers" were condemned to be burnt. Prominent preachers from the upper hierarchy of the Church addressed themselves to the accused as unrepentant, stubborn Jews, in terms of the most outrageous vituperation. In reality, the sermons were not meant for the miserable victims, but instead intended to impress the spectators, as an act of justification of the pitiless persecution of heresy. Cassuto, Alfonso.
