Woodcut initials, tail-pieces and illustrations of fish, birds, plants, and genre scenes (some leaves spotted or lightly browned, lacking blank 2E2). Contemporary vellum, spine gilt (minor soiling). Provenance: Jacob Laviensis? (early inscription on title verso).

Second edition of Historia naturalis Brasiliae, with revisions and additions including Georg Marggraf's astronomical observations and Jacob Bontius on the natural history of the East Indies. Willem Piso was the physician of the Dutch settlement in Brazil from 1636 to 1644 and a pioneer in tropical medicine, being the first European to grasp the pharmacologic uses of ipecacuanha, sassafras, sarsaparilla, guaiacum, and other native plants.
