FRANKLIN, Benjamin (1706-1790). The Art of Making Money Plenty in Every Mans Pocket. Edinburgh: Edward Mitchell, [ca. 1820].

8o folded proof broadsheet, uncut and unopened (together 284 x 440 mm). Engraved title and seven illustrated engravings (light soiling, small hole within figure, a few short parts along folds). Laid-in cloth portfolio.

An interesting survival, being an uncut and unopened folded proof broadsheet of Mitchell's Edinburgh edition of Franklin's famous rebus. Gottlieb writes that the work expresses "Benjamin Franklin's well-known philosophy of thrift and honest toil" (Gottlieb, Early Children's Books and Their Illustration, 191). Dayton, Harvey and Darton had published an edition in London in 1817.
