George Franklin Getty was a Minnesota lawyer who moved his wife Sarah Risher Getty and his son to the Oklahoma territory in 1904 and began a successful career as an independant oilman. Two years later, the family moved to Los Angeles, where J. Paul Getty attended the Polytechnic High School. During summers off from college, he worked on his father's oil rigs as a "roustabout." By 1914, the younger Getty arrived in Tulsa, Oklahoma determined to succeed as an oil producer, a goal which he more than fulfilled.
