A rare portrait of the elderly former President, taken at the height of the Civil War. Buchanan, seated, holds a sheaf of papers in his hand and gazes directly at the camera. This image, by an unidentified photographer, is far rarer than the portraits by E. & H.T. Anthony of New York usually encountered in carte size. Signed (rather shakily, by the elderly Buchanan) in the blank lower portion of the mount "James Buchanan 1 August 1862."
VERY RARE: only two other signed photographs of Buchanan have been offered at auction in the last 25 years: one dated 1865 in the Jacobs Collecton (sale, Sotheby's, 29 October 1996, lot 91, $5000) and one in the Jerome Shochet Collection (sale, Christie's, 20 May 1994, lot 9, $7,000).
