COOLIDGE EXPRESSES GRATITUDE FOR EDITORIAL PRAISE

On August 2, 1923, in the midst of a presidential tour to the west coast, President Warren Harding suffered a massive stroke and died. Within hours, Vice President Coolidge was sworn in as the 30th President of the United States. Here, three months after taking the oath, Coolidge expresses his thanks for an approving editorial in the Dayton Journal: "Just now I had a chance to read your editorial article very carefully and hasten to express my thanks for its more than generous praise. I could wish nothing more than the power to live up to the high place it has set for me." After a few friendly remarks, he concludes "You will let me know any time I can serve you."

An excellent example, very boldly penned, of a rare Coolidge ALS as president. (2)
