During the early stages of the conflict in Vietnam, Johnson explains the purpose of U.S. involvement: "At home our basic task is to improve the quality of life for all Americans. In Vietnam we are trying to improve the quality of justice for all the people in that area. The roots of our commitment there run deep in the policies and declarations of three Presidents. Our aim today is the same as it was when President Eisenhower first enunciated our commitment: to help a valiant people, besieged by aggressors, make a free choice of independent political leadership." -- JOHNSON. JOHNSON MEETS DIRECTOR DORE SCHARY. A superb black and white photo of President Johnson conversing with Schary on a couch at the White House. The President has written in the margin at the bottom "To Dore Schary, with affection Lyndon B. Johnson." Schary (1905-1980) was one of Hollywood's most distinguished and prolific writers, directors and producers, winning an Academy Award and several Tony Awards during his career. He also served as National Chairman of the Anti-Defamation League and as New York City's Commissioner of Cultural Affairs. -- JOHNSON. Printed White House dinner menu inscribed and signed ("Lyndon B. Johnson") as President, Washington, 10 April 1968. 13-line ink inscription and full signature on a 6½ x 4 1/8 inch card, gold presidential seal at top. At the bottom of the finely printed menu Johnson writes "For my dear Carol, with all my affection on this my 31 anniversary." The occasion celebrated the anniversary of Johnson's first step into Washington politics as a Texas Congressman in 1937. -- With an ALS from Mrs. Abe Fortas (wife of the late Supreme Court justice, appointed by Johnson), forwarding the menu to Campbell.
