TWO TAFT RARITIES: A PRESIDENTIAL ALS AND A SIGNED AND INSCRIBED PHOTO AS PRESIDENT

In the middle of his term as Chief Excecutive, Taft writes to the mother of a recent appointee: "I was very glad to appoint Franz. I have no doubt he will reflect credit on the country and the administration responsible for his selection." Noting his fondness for the correspondent's home town, Taft regrets that he will be unable to take a vacation: "I wish we could visit Bar Harbor this summer but my time is so short that we may have to give it up." Five months later, the President inscribed and signed a fine sepia-toned portrait for Robert Coster. Taft, dressed in a three-piece suit, stands in a relaxed pose, his hands in his pockets, as he gazes toward the camera.

Although Taft letters are legion, autograph letters in office are distinctly uncommon. The inclusion of "The White House" in the inscription on the photograph is unusual.
