WASHINGTON GRANTS AN HONORABLE DISCHARGE to Solomon Williams, "a soldier in the Third Connecticut Regiment." Carey, the document certifies, has "faithfully served the United States" for Six Years, from February 1777, and has been "honored with the Badge of Merit."

A discharge dated the day after Washington's famous letter to the states announcing his retirement, since the "great object," independence, had been realized at last, even though the final peace treaty had not yet been signed in Paris (see notes to previous lot). The 3rd Connecticut Regiment, had been organized at Hartford, Connecticut in early 1777; in 1781 it was consolidated with the 4th Connecticut Regiment and most of its service was in the New York area, especially the Hudson Highlands.
