Esther Salmson, a painter, draughtsman and engraver, was born in Malmo, Sweden 1877 and died in Stockholm in 1966. From 1897 to 1903, she studied at the Swedish Royal Academy, where she also learned engraving under Axel Tallberg, probably Sweden's most refined etcher. She won a scholarship to study abroad and first went to Paris where she enlisted at the prestigious Académie de la Grande Chaumiére. She then went to further her studies in Germany, Italy and Denmark, painting in oil, charcoal and pastel.

In 1920, Salmson held her own exhibition with fellow artists Els Zetteberg-Strom and Helene Herslow in Vasteras. In group exhibitions, she participated at the Skanska Konstnarinnor (Skane Artists Union), the Foreningen Svenska Konstnarinnor (Swedish Women Artists Association), the Skanska Museum in 1912 and in Vienna in 1913. She also represented Sweden at the Baltic Exhibitions in Malmo, 1914 and Copenhagen, 1920. She participated at the Salongen (Salons) in Stockholm and exhibited at the prestigious 'Liljevalchs Gallery' in 1917 and 1927.
