Wilhelm Schimmel was born in Hess-Darmstadt, Germany and traveled to Pennsylvania settling in Cumberland Valley, near Carlisle. He whittled whimsical figures which he often exchanged for drink, meals or money. He never traveled too far from Condoguinet Creek and died in the Cumberland County Almshouse.
