In 18th century style, the oval stand on four scroll feet, with shell and scroll border, with two baluster-form pots, one for ink, the other for pounce, flanking a larger pen holder with central finial and ring handle, marked under base and each pot

Lot Essay

The inkstand is engraved under the base: "REPLICA OF INKSTAND USED AT THE SIGNING OF THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE OF AMERICA"

This inkstand is a reproduction of the famous inkstand made by Philadelphia silversmith Philip Syng, Jr. in 1752 for the Provincial Assembly of Pennsylvania. The original inkstand is now at Independence Hall in Philadelphia.
