Rectangular, worked in gold, green, blue and black silk threads on a linen ground with alphabetic and numeric registers with the date 1746 above a floral and geometric motifs with initials EF, IRMR, SH, E, bears a paper label inscribed Worked by Sarah Riddell

According to family tradition this work descended through the Riddell Family of Virginia. This sampler relates to a group of samplers from 18th century Virginia, if indeed from Virginia, it is one of the earliest Virginia textiles. See "The First Effort of an Infant Hand," Antiques
